Dear Ta Nea and Theophanis
As you must be aware there was an exhibition held last week 5 and 6 May 2017 at the Design Centre Islington termed “north Cyprus Festival”.
We attended to quietly protest at the promotion of our occupied lands: advertising to sell homes and construct on stolen land, promotion of unrecognised “universities” (to be 24 in the north!), tourism on occupied territory etc. Basically to highlight the apartheid in north Cyprus for a mostly unaware English public.
One security guard working for the Design Centre (not the festival) was Turkish and was as good as gold, even bringing us tea from inside! He looked after us and made sure no-one bothered us too much. A really nice guy.
Sadly however, though we went hoping to inform the public about the realities, every single Turkish person who spoke to us was rather aggressive and called us “racists and stirring trouble” and that we should not be allowed to be there- no free speech, while they were swearing, knocking our posters over, trying to tear them, even calling us “English basdards “and “fuc*** Irish”! We were very sad after looking for a polite discussion if approached.
Unfortunately nearly all told us and actually believe that “Cyprus has ALWAYS been Turkish”, “Britain rented it from Turkey”, “We will take it all”, “ You will wait 200 years and still not get it back”. They accused the Greeks of genocide (though ignoring the Armenian one). We always apologise on behalf of Greek Cypriots for any Turks killed by any GC idiots, yet sadly we never hear an apology from Turks.
We attended all day Friday and all day Saturday. Sadly but not surprisingly no-one else from the GC community came to support us. This is always the case; I fear it is because nothing is being achieved by those above and also the apartheid plans being promulgated.
We left quite saddened at both the extremely negative and aggressive Turkish stance and the absence of GC involvement. No one from the Federation was there.
The positive thing though was that the “festival” was extremely poorly attended, over both days we saw around 50 Turkish/TC people and we didn’t notice any English people going in.
In God we trust.
